One of the biggest mistakes people make with skincare is using products that aren't right for their skin type. The most expensive serum in the world won't help if it's formulated for the opposite skin type from yours. Let's start from the beginning.
How to Identify Your Skin Type
The simplest test: Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and wait 30 minutes without applying anything. Then observe:
- Oily: Your entire face is shiny and you may feel the urge to blot. Pores may appear larger.
- Dry: Skin feels tight, may look dull or flaky, and fine lines are more visible.
- Combination: Shiny T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) but normal or dry cheeks.
- Normal: Skin feels comfortable, minimal shine, no tightness. Lucky you.
- Sensitive: Skin reacts easily to products — redness, stinging, or breakouts after trying new things.
Oily Skin
Use a gel or foam cleanser like our Clarifying Foam Wash — it removes excess oil without over-stripping. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser. Don't skip moisturiser — dehydrated oily skin overproduces oil to compensate.
Dry Skin
Opt for a cream cleanser like our Softening Creamy Cleanser that cleanses without stripping. Layer a hydrating serum under a rich moisturiser. Avoid alcohol-based toners and harsh exfoliants.
Combination Skin
The challenge here is treating two skin types at once. A gentle balanced cleanser works across the face. For moisturiser, apply a lighter formula to the T-zone and a richer one to your cheeks.
Sensitive Skin
Keep it simple and fragrance-free where possible. Introduce one new product at a time and patch test on your inner arm before applying to your face. Build a minimal, gentle routine rather than layering multiple actives.
Skin Changes Over Time
Your skin type isn't permanent. It shifts with seasons, age, hormones, diet, and stress. Reassess every 3-6 months and adjust your routine accordingly.
